Preparing European tortoises for winter brumation is not a single event but a gradual process. This six-part guide walks through the usual four weeks of temperature reduction, followed by the resting and established-brumation period in the cold frame, before any transfer to a prepared brumation refrigerator.
Weeks 1–4 constitute the usual gradual temperature-reduction period. Weeks 5–6 concern resting and established brumation in the cold frame. Testudo graeca ibera from warmer southern habitats may require a slower, individual schedule.
The six weeks at a glance
- Week 1 – Preparing European Tortoises for Brumation – beginning the reduction, climate data and early preparations.
- Week 2 – Gradual Temperature Reduction Before Brumation – species-specific targets and refrigerator preparation.
- Week 3 – Lowering Night-Time Temperatures – approaching the brumation range, patience before transfer.
- Week 4 – Completing the Temperature Reduction – the end of the standard four-week reduction.
- Week 5 – Resting and Entering Brumation – stability and observation in the cold frame.
- Week 6 – Established Brumation – final checks before transfer to the refrigerator.
